The DXARTS SoftLab is a studio and an online platform whose mission is to examine the role of workmanship in artistic research, to redefine the use of crafting in the post-digital era, and to explore the body as an interface of control and resistance. It is part of the Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Imagine a world without birds tweeting, without cicadas chirping, without children laughing, without people singing. All the sounds you like or don't like are blurred, muted, and away from you. It is like a world where you are covered with a transparent glass cover that cannot be broken or touched, isolated. In this project, I stepped into such a world.

Deaf people, an absolute minority in any society, became the whole world of this project. Other than "Speak" for them, I chose to give their special voice a color.

Some people would relate numbers with color, some would relate emotions with color. Here, the concept "COLOR" then is assigned to VOICE. One does not have to speak to express one's emotions or feelings. American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that is widely used by the Deaf communities in the United States and some areas in Canada.

Like the first flower blooming in spring, like a butterfly gently shaking its wings, like a drop of water merging into a stream, there are sounds we may have missed, but we have welcomed the world.
