The DXARTS SoftLab is a studio and an online platform whose mission is to examine the role of workmanship in artistic research, to redefine the use of crafting in the post-digital era, and to explore the body as an interface of control and resistance. It is part of the Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Wearable Narratives #1

Wearable Narratives #1

Excited to share that this Spring 2021 quarter I have put together a directed research group entitled ‘Wearable Narratives’ comprised by Esteban Yosef Agosin (DXARTS), Grace Barar (HCDE/DXARTS), Rylie Sweem (HCDE/DXARTS), Xintong Xu (Art IVA/ DXARTS), Zoe Grace Kaputa (Computer Science), and Sadaf Sadri (Art Photomedia), which will focus on researching e-textiles and wearables through the perspective of storytelling. The group will be meeting every Tuesday morning 11:30am-1pm on Zoom.

The goal for each participant is to work on an individual project and then compile the projects in an experimental publication containing swatches of the experiments of each person, as well as a webzine. Each session will focus on introducing e-textiles techniques, materials and skills, and discussing topics of interest for its participants. We also anticipate having guest fellow e-textile practitioners that will share their work and a brief skill-sharing technique with the group.

On this first meeting, we introduced ourselves, and the materials we will be working with, and finally watched Hannah Perner-Wilson’s videolog Meet The Materials S01E01.
