Agente Costura-Making Music Out of Making Clothes by Lisa Simpson
On Tuesday, 25 May at 11:30am PST Lisa Simpson joined the Wearable Narratives DRG for an artist talk about her project 'Agente Costura'.
Performed with sewing machines turned into noise boxes, Agente Costura’s improvisations are based on stitching and mending. The repetitiveness of an amplified machine is layered with melodic features of self-made wearable electronic instruments, talking hats and musical handbags, oscillating, and feedback machines.
In her visit Lisa talked about her trajectory into the world of stitching, and sound making, her personal diy ethic, and the political aspect of engaging with processes of up-cycling artifacts and garments to create her unique artistic expression. We also had the opportunity to see her perform through a first-person perspective using a wearable camera on her neck, which was an amazing treat! She then shared an overview of her handmade instruments, and finished up with a bit of skill-sharing by introducing us to a solar-powered oscillator using the 74HC14 hex inverter Schmitt-trigger IC.
